NIAAA’s mission is to assist adults age 60 and older and their families. NIAAA is one of 13 Area Agencies in Illinois and 670 across the nation sharing the mission of the federal law known as the Older Americans Act.

A 21 member Board of Directors representing the nine counties of our region governs NIAAA. The Board receives input from a 21 member Advisory Council. For more information about the advisory council, click here. 

NIAAA's nine county service area includes a senior population of over 127,000 and an estimated caregiver population of over 56,600. Annually, over 28,000 persons age 60 and older receive one or more of NIAAA’s fourteen funded services.

NIAAA develops and administers an 'Area Plan' for aging services in northwestern Illinois. The Area Plan is a comprehensive planning, management and funding document. In developing the plan, NIAAA assesses the needs of older adults, identifies issues for long-range planning, sets priorities for funding, and outlines state and local initiatives. As part of the planning and funding process, a network of social, nutritional, and other supportive services for older persons and their caregivers is established.
